What made this hard, and how it was solved

Every school has one constraint that decides the whole week. Here is this school's.

The hard part

Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics and Geography practicals all need their own room, and both grades want them — four Science sections between Classes XI and XII competing for the same three science labs. A practical is also useless as two periods either side of lunch: it has to be one uninterrupted double.

How it was solved

Every practical books its own laboratory, so a Class XII Physics practical and a Class XI Chemistry practical run at the same hour without ever meeting. Each stream is modelled as its own class, which is what lets three different subjects legitimately occupy the same period across the school — that is what an elective band is. And every practical is placed as a true double: two consecutive periods inside the same run, never split by the break or by lunch.
